“Sometimes we get through adversity only by imagining what the world might be like if our dreams should ever come true.” (Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha 370)
In this quote Sayuri reveals the significant impact dreams and faith had on her life. By dreaming big she provided herself with a hope to carry on. She illustrates how sometimes getting through life’s difficulties takes a great amount of belief and faith. When life threw her hardballs, instead of depressing over the issue, she thought optimistic thoughts. She imagined herself in a world of peace and love which brought her out of her miserable reality.
This is incredibly similar to Nomi’s philosophy in A Complicated Kindness. When Nomi’s mother and sister leave home, Nomi consults denial to get her by. She dreams of life with the whole family together again – everything back to normal. Nomi, though, is a different type of character than Sayuri is. Sayuri is extremely optimistic and hopeful of a life where her dreams are fulfilled (living with the Chairman), while Nomi on the other hand denies more than she dreams.
These two women have similar problems, both dealing with love issues, family dismemberment and historical or religious set backs. Nomi is suppressed by her Mennonite community, unable to express her feelings and desires, while Sayuri is restrained by World War II and the drawbacks it brings, starvation and poverty.
In the end both got what they wanted - freedom from oppression. Sayuri ends up with the man of her dreams, living a prosperous life, and Nomi escapes from the emotionally oppressed stage in her life. Neither woman though, ever lost her way throughout the journey – by either denying or dreaming – which shows how strong minded and persistent they were when overcoming their hardships. Neither Sayuri nor Nomi gave up hope of a better future. They modeled the way to achievement through their own difficulties and proved that faith is sometimes the most important attribute to human conduct.
