A Complicated Kindness was written in 2004 by Miriam Toews. It follows the story of Nomi Nickel, a young woman living in a smothering Mennonite town. She is left to live alone with her father when the rest of her family disappears. Nomi is trying to steer clear of a promised career at the town’s chicken abattoir and dreams of a brighter future somewhere else. This book has themes of family relationships and coming of age.
Miriam Toews is the author of “Summer of My Amazing Luck”, “Boy of Good Breeding”, and “The Flying Troutmans”. She won the 2004 Governor General’s Literacy Award and a finalist at the 2004 Giller Prize Awards. Toews lives in Winipeg, Canada.
